LavaTM non-adhesive liquid embolic agent is a type of minimally invasive used to block blood vessels for the treatment of various medical conditions, such as arteriovenous malformations and aneurysms. This technique involves the injection a non-adhesive liquid embolic agent into the blood vessel, which then hardens of and locks the flow of blood. One of the main advantages of non-adhesive liquid embolic agents is their ability to selectively target specific blood vessels while leaving surrounding tissue intact. This is achieved by careful placement of the non-adhesive liquid embolic agent, which can be guided by imaging techniques such as angiography.
LavaTM non-adhesive liquid embolic agents are rapidly becoming a preferred treatment option for a variety of vascular and neurovascular diseases. These agents can be used to occlude arterial or venous vessels with minimum trauma, reduced risk of ischemic complications, and high degree of precision. It is a liquid-polymer embolic agent that solidifies upon contact with blood. Its non-adhesive properties make it ideal for selective embolization of high-flow arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the brain. NeuroSafe developed a specific micronization process to minimize Tantalum powder grain size in the Lava solution. This enables slower precipitation of the radiopaque powder which stays longer in the Lava suspension. As a liquid embolic agent, Lava can reach small vessels deep within the nidus, sometimes far away from the delivery microcatheter. At the same time, different predictable viscosities allow safe agent delivery, with low risk of distal nontarget embolization.
Features & Advantages
1. Non-adhesive material makes it do not stick to the catheter or vessel wall, which reduces the risk of occluding critical blood vessels.
2. It accommodates to different clinical requirements because of comprehensive degrees of viscosity (Lava 12, Lava 18 and Lava 34).
3. Lava non-adhesive liquid embolic agents have excellent dispersal properties. This is largely due to its unique formulation of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). When mixed together, these two components create a thick, viscous liquid that can be easily injected into the targeted blood vessels. The properties of the polymer allow it to spread out and fill the aneurysm or other lesion, creating a solid mass that effectively occludes the vessel.
4. Stable and controlled delivery to target embolism.
5. Excellent visibility under fluoroscopy and other imaging modalities. Lava contains tantalum, a radiopaque material that allows for real-time visualization of the embolic agent as it is being injected into the vessel. This makes it easier for the operator to control the injection and ensure proper embolization, improving patient safety and reducing the risk of complications.
