Lava DMSO embolization system is a non adhesive liquid embolic agent for embolization of brain Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM). It is composed of EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer) with suspended micronized Tantalum powder for radiopacity and DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) solvent. Lava must be injected through a DMSO compatible microcatheter.
DMSO Embolization System
The use of LavaTM DMSO embolization system has been widely used in the management of a wide range of medical conditions. Embolic agents are used to occlude or block blood vessels to prevent or reduce blood flow to an area of the body. Liquid embolic systems have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional embolic agents. These systems consist of a liquid embolic agent and a delivery device that allows for controlled and precise delivery of the agent. NeuroSafe developed a specific micronization process to minimize Tantalum powder grain size in the Lava solution. This enables a slower precipitation of the radiopaque powder which stays longer in the Lava suspension. A highly viscous embolic agent may not be able to penetrate deep into the vasculature, limiting its effectiveness. On the other hand, a low viscosity agent may spread too easily, potentially causing unintended embolization. Therefore, the ideal liquid embolic agent should have a viscosity that allows for easy injection and good penetration, while retaining enough viscosity to prevent unintended spread. The characteristics of the embolic agent will affect the properties of the device used for delivery. The delivery catheter must be able to accommodate the viscosity of the embolic agent, making it critical to choose an agent that is suitable for the device used for delivery. Additionally, the viscosity of the embolic agent will affect the ease of administration and the capability to control the volume of the agent delivered.
